Yorba Linda Couple Found Dead in Hiking Area

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said it is investigating the death of a Yorba Linda couple whose bodies were found on Aug. 12.

At 1:41 p.m., 58-year-old Kathie Barber and her husband, 60-year-old Gen Miake, were hiking in the area of the Amboy Crater National Monument, approximately 1.5 miles east of the parking lot area. Barber called 911 in distress and said that she had gotten separated from her husband and they were lost. She also stated that her husband had a heart condition.

An extensive ground and air search was conducted by the Sheriff’s Department. Miake was located at 4:05 p.m. and Barber was located about 150 yards away from her husband at 4:22 p.m. Both were confirmed deceased.

According to their Facebook profiles, the couple married in 1983 and would have celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on Aug. 21. Miake was from Milwaukee and Barber was from Santa Ana; both studied at UC Irvine. Miake worked at Clarion, a Japanese car audio manufacturer, and Barber worked at Raytheon.
