Togen Daiko to Celebrate 20th Anniversary
OXNARD — Togen Daiko, a Japanese American Buddhist drumming group, will celebrate 20 years of taiko in Ventura County with a concert on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 3 p.m. at Oxnard High School Performing Arts Theater, 3400 W. Gonzales Rd. in Oxnard.
The group will be joined by Ichimi Daiko of San Luis Obispo; Azuma Kotobuki Kai of Ventura County, a classical Japanese dance troupe; and Kinnara Taiko of Los Angeles, the first Japanese American Buddhist taiko group, founded in 1969.
“We have been privileged to perform for the military, schools, churches, temples, and cultural events for public and private venues throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara counties,” the group said in a statement. “We want to continue to expand and share the living tradition of taiko, entertaining communities throughout the Central Coast. This 20th Anniversary Concert celebration is dedicated with gratitude to the communities that inspire us to continue to share this unique art form …
“Additionally, in giving back to the communities, we have partnered with local nonprofits to spread their vision and affirm their impact in our community. During a ticket sale, you can designate your preferred nonprofit to receive 50 percent of your ticket dollars. We will also donate 10 percent of our total sponsorship dollars earned to Pets for Vets, who are dedicating their work to helping our veterans.”
