Salinas Obon This Sunday


SALINAS — Salinas Buddhist Temple, 14 California St. in Salinas, will hold its Obon Festival on Sunday, July 31, from 12 to 8 p.m.

All-day activities:

• Ikebana floral displays and bonsai exhibit in classroom complex

• Food sales in food court and in the Main Hall

• Asian crafts in the Main Hall

• Games in the courtyard area in front of the Hondo

Schedule of events:

12:30 p.m.: Tea ceremony in Hondo

1 p.m.: Shorinji-Kempo on Outdoor Stage

1:30 p.m.: Introduction to the temple in Hondo

2 p.m.: Bonsai demonstration in Classroom

2:30 p.m.: Kendo demonstration on Outdoor Stage

3 p.m.: Classical Japanese dance and karaoke in Main Hall; ikebana floral demonstration in Classroom

4 p.m.: San Jose Taiko performance on Outdoor Stage

5:30 p.m.: Obon service in Hondo

6 p.m.: Obon Odori dance outdoors

7 p.m.: Raffle drawing in Main Hall

Parking will be available at Salinas Adult School, 20 Sherwood Dr. There will be shuttle bus service, provided by Tanimura & Antle, between the school and the temple from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
