GenRyu Arts’ 21st Anniversary Concert

Founded as Gen Taiko by Melody Takata in 1995 and incorporated as GenRyu Arts in 2008, GenRyu Arts is deeply rooted in San Francisco’s Japantown and in the larger Asian American community. It engages in art-making that merges Japanese cultural forms such as taiko, dance and folk songs with new music, spoken word and visual design into singular expressions that honor community heritage and address key issues stemming from the legacy of wartime incarceration and postwar redevelopment.

GenRyu Arts’ programs include a taiko and dance school at the JCCCNC, school-site residencies and assembly performances, and a professional arts ensemble creating collaborations among artists of all genres.

Recent appearances include Sumo Day in Japantown Peace Plaza, a fundraiser for the Asian Women’s Shelter, and a Halloween event at the JCCCNC. The ensemble has also performed with Tsukasa Taiko in Chicago.

General admission is $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Tickets for students (5 to 18) and seniors (65+) are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. For tickets, visit
