GARDENA — A 75-year-old Gardena resident died on Oct. 19 after being struck by an SUV the previous day.

Michio Nakaiye of Gardena was hit around 4:35 a.m. on Oct. 18 at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Vermont Avenue — near the 91 Freeway entrance/exit — and died at a local hospital about 13 hours later, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office and the Gardena Police Department.

Traffic investigators said that Nakaiye was walking north across Artesia in the crosswalk when he was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe going westbound on Artesia. The motorist remained at the scene and was interviewed by police.

Anyone who witnessed the accident was asked to call GPD Investigator Matthew Hassoldt at (310) 217-6189 or Sgt. Mark Thompson at (310) 217-6183.
