Drama in the Family
East West Players’ Writers Gallery presented a reading of “Spoiled,” a play by Ken Narasaki, on Oct. 17 at the Japanese American National Museum’s Tateuchi Democracy Forum. In this dark comedy, a Japanese American mother and her adult children, Joe and Josie, function well in the world but become a hot mess when they get together. Seated, from left: Nathan Singh, director; Narasaki; Marilyn Tokuda, who played Janice, Joe’s ex-wife. Standing, from left: Sharon Rosner (Therapist), Dian Kobayashi (Mom), Mike Hagiwara (Ghost Dad), Emily Kuroda (Josie), Snehal Desai, EWP producing artistic director. Not pictured: Feodor Chin, who played Joe. Narasaki, who is also an actor, has written such plays as “Innocent When You Dream,” “Ghosts and Baggage,” and the stage adaptation of “No-No Boy.” (Photo by J.K. YAMAMOTO/Rafu Shimpo)
