Diablo Valley JA Club’s 60th Summer Festival
CONCORD — The Diablo Japanese American Club will hold its 60th Anniversary Summer Festival on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 1 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 14, from 12 to 8:30 p.m. at the Japanese American Religious and Cultural Center, 3165 Treat Blvd. in Concord.
Established in 1956, the festival is a very popular and highly anticipated event for many in the community and elsewhere in the East Bay. It features games for kids; cultural performances, exhibits and demonstrations; Bon Odori; and, of course, food, including sushi, chicken and beef teriyaki, tempura, udon, gyoza and shaved ice.
Admission is free. Free parking is available at nearby Ygnacio Valley High School, 755 Oak Grove Rd., with free shuttle service.
Schedule of events:
Saturday, Aug 13
1 p.m.: Food booths and concessions open; bonsai display; calligraphy
2 p.m.: Iaido (swordsmanship) demonstration
3 p.m.: Diablo Taiko performance
4:30 p.m.: Judo demonstration
6 p.m.: San Jose Taiko performance
7 p.m.: Matsutoyo Kai (folk songs and dance)
7:30 p.m.: Obon Odori
Sunday, Aug. 14
12 p.m.: Food booths and concessions open; bonsai display; calligraphy
2 p.m.: Ikenobo ikebana demonstration
3 p.m.: Sonoma Taiko performance
4 p.m. Kendo demonstration
5 p.m.: Tatsumaki Taiko performance
6 p.m.: Michiya Hanayagi Dancers
6:30 p.m.: Obon Odori
8:30 p.m.: Raffle drawing (need not be present to win)
