Japan-Korea Family Gathering and Seminar

The Japan-Korea Family Gathering and Seminar, hosted by Fruit of the Spirit Lutheran Community, will be held on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 2 p.m. at FS Lutheran Community, 2706 W. 182nd St. in Torrance.

The event is an opportunity to form and support a new and positive relationship among Japanese-Korean multiethnic families that reside in the Los Angeles area. The purpose is for these families to get together and discuss common concerns and issues related to child-rearing in the U.S.

Participants can discuss how parents can help their children formulate a positive self-image and identity, and also share resources for multicultural education. It is hoped that Japanese and Korean families will be able to strengthen their network and co-exist in a harmonious way in this country.

The keynote speaker will be Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi of the 66th Assembly District. Congratulatory speeches will be given by representatives of the Japanese and Korean consulates in Los Angeles.

Facilitators will include Rev. Hongsun Kim, a former social worker. Topics will include how to resolve issues that arise from cultural differences, and resources to preserve cultural heritage and the ability to speak three languages (Japanese, Korean and English).

The program will include Japanese and Korean traditional music performances by Music Atelier (Masaaki Yamazaki and Mika Yamamoto).

Supported by Asian American Christian Counseling Service Inc. Admission is free but reservations are required. The event is open to anyone who agrees with its purpose, including Japanese-Korean couples and families. Child care is available. Translators are available upon request. Refreshments will be served.
